The DOs & DON'Ts of Moving

Is your move-in date starting to sneak up on you? Haven’t started packing yet?

Well don’t worry! We thought it would be helpful to share some tips and tricks on how to make your experience as stress-free as possible. Whether you’re hiring movers or moving yourself, this DOs & DON'Ts list will come in handy and keep you organized as you get ready for the big day.

DO: Label
We’re not just talking about writing what’s inside the box, but also making sure it’s clear what room the box is going into. This will save time and energy once all your stuff is inside your new condo and eliminate the inconvenience of having to shift boxes around the place. Giving each room its own colour (the bathroom boxes have blue tape, the kitchen has red, the bedroom has yellow, etc.) will make identifying the rooms your boxes go in that much easier, along with writing the room it’s going into and the contents of it.

DO: Pack Strategically
Put small pieces in ziplock bags, put heavy items on the bottom of the box, lighter items on the top, and don’t pack your important documents (birth certificate, etc). These are just a few of the small details that are vital to making your life a lot easier when you’re transporting your things from Point A to Point B.

DO: Change Your Address
Let your friends and family know you’re moving so your birthday cards don’t get lost in the mail, and change any magazine or newspaper subscriptions you have to your new address! Try to think of as many places as you can that have your address on file and give them notice that it has been changed. The last thing you want is your important mail (and bills) going to the wrong place!

DO: Purge
Have a garage sale, bring household items and clothing to a Salvation Army, or just plain offer to give some of your stuff away. When moving into a new space, it’s best not to bring things in that you don’t and won’t ever use. The less clutter, the better!

DON’T: Move Alone
Don’t think you can move out and into your new condo by yourself. Whether you plan to hire movers or do it yourself, ask your friends and family to help out. An important note: ask/book early!

DON’T: Pack Everything
As mentioned above, don’t pack your valuable papers (or even items) in your moving boxes. Hold on to them for safe keeping. Also, make sure you leave out essential items for at least a few days around your move and pack them in an overnight bag. Sometimes in the mix of things you can forget that you’ll actually need a change of clothing and a toothbrush for the day of the move - so don’t pack it all away!
